Here are five qualities that you will need to be a successful home-based worker.
Believe in Yourself
It is one thing to have an idea, but it is quite another to bring it to fruition. You need to have a strong self-belief that what you are doing will work in the end. There will be lots of twists and turns before your great idea is a successful business and you will need to be strong during the bad times as well as the good.
This is not a time to be stubborn and keep on regardless, however. You will need to ask others for their advice and be prepared to take it. Look for people who have done a similar thing to you but have successfully negotiated some of the earlier trials of starting up a business.
Set Goals and Assess Them
Once you have gotten through the first flush of excitement about your idea, you will need to decide how to put it into practice and how to judge whether your business is realistic. Many advise writing a business plan, and it can be a good idea, if a little daunting at first. If you are unsure that a plan is what you need at this point, at least set some goals.
Think through the jobs that you are going to have to do in order to get this business up and running and set yourself deadlines to get them done by. Next, think about where you would like the business to be in a year and then work backwards. Where would you like to be in six months, three months and a month? You could set yourself alerts on your mobile phone to check how you are doing on your goals.
Willing to Learn the Right Skills
You may not have the full skill set that you will need in order to carry out your plan, but are you able to learn? You may not have the best skills with computers, you may never have built a website before or you may be unsure about approaching people over the phone. These are skills that you can learn and should be prepared to learn in order to help your business grow. Use your contacts - if you know someone who is good at building websites, ask for help. Talking on the telephone takes nerves and practice, but the more you do it the better you will get. It may also help to write out a brief script outlining what you want to say.
Keep Track of Your Finances
Once you have decided to take that step, you will need to find out the rules governing tax in your country. Most government websites have information on them regarding how much time you have to register your business. Once registered, you will have to fill in a tax return at the end of the financial year and may have to pay tax. Keeping receipts and bills in a single place and in good order will help you to do this. There may be financial penalties for setting up a business without informing your local tax office and for filling in a late tax return.
Be Organised in Your Business
Organisation is the best way to juggle everything that you will need to do. One of the issues with working from home can be distractions from the housework, the family and visitors. Make part of each day exclusive to your business and set it to suit you. If you are best working very early in the morning before the children wake, then do that. Equally if you find it easier to work at night when they are asleep, then arrange the day accordingly. Keep good records of your transactions and be prompt in returning client calls and emails. Send yourself a 'To Do' email at the end of every day to help you to remember the first jobs for the following morning.
Starting up your own business is hard work and there are many other qualities you will need. These are five of the most important. If you are able to set goals, have a willingness to learn new skills, can be organised and keep an eye on your finances, then your business will be in good shape. However, without self-belief, no project would get off the ground. Keep good customer reviews in a folder on your desktop, remind yourself of your satisfied customers and understand that without you, there would be no business.
